The Wrong Birthday Gift

One year for my birthday, I was so excited because I knew my parents had planned a surprise. When I woke up, I ran downstairs expecting a big celebration. Instead, I found a beautifully wrapped box sitting on the table. I tore open the paper eagerly, only to discover it was a sweater—something I had secretly told my mom I didn’t like. I tried to hide my disappointment, but my face gave me away. My parents looked at each other and started laughing, saying they thought I’d like it because it was so “stylish.” I felt a mix of embarrassment and frustration. I didn’t want to hurt their feelings, but inside I was thinking, “This isn’t what I wanted at all!” That day, I learned that sometimes, surprises don’t turn out the way you expect, and it’s okay to be honest about your feelings. Still, I remember feeling awkward accepting gifts I didn’t like in front of everyone, which made me dread birthday celebrations for a while.
