When I was in fifth grade, my best friend and I liked to joke around during recess. One day, I tried to be funny and made a silly joke about our teacher’s glasses. I thought it was harmless, but as soon as I said it, I saw her face fall. The teacher overheard, and I immediately felt terrible. I expected her to laugh, but instead, she looked upset. I was called to the principal’s office and had to apologize in front of everyone. I felt so embarrassed and ashamed for making a joke that wasn’t funny to her. That day, I learned that humor can be tricky—what’s funny to one person might hurt someone else. It made me more careful about what I said, especially around teachers and friends. Now, I understand that kindness is more important than trying to be funny at someone else’s expense.
